Last time I talked about how important is it to use your brain properly and constantly. Now I would like to reflect to the same issue little bit more, because I believe that it is crucially important if your goal is improving memory, increasing brain power or just trying to prevent degenerative disease and maintain clarity in old age.
Although just a theory, some scientists believe that the lack of diverse mental activities hampers the brain development, thus decreasing brain power and intelligence and even physically shrinking the human brain.
Why properly using your brain is so important?
Every information, sensation, new experience, people etc. stimulates the brain and it creates new neural pathways that number in millions. It is common knowledge that the more connections you have in your brain the faster the computational power is and this directly leads to higher IQ and increased brain power. By the time we’ve reached adulthood, the brain has developed millions of neural pathways that help us process information quickly, solve familiar problems, and execute familiar tasks with a minimum of mental effort.
But these connections and pathways are not eternal. If you do not repeat a certain activity or you do not renew the knowledge you once gained they will deteriorate and you will forget. A great example of this is learning a foreign language. If you do not use it regularly you will forget it i.e. the neural connections leading to the place in your brain where information about that language is stored will weaken and you will not be able to use this knowledge.
However if you make an effort and learn something new, create additional neural pathways and connections, but later if you always stick to these well-worn paths, the brain will not receive the stimulation it needs to keep growing and developing. People have done exactly that during the development of civilization and society. We have had it easy and because of that we have become lazy, especially when it comes to taking care of our brains.
Anyway, there is something you can do. You need to always try new things which are outside of your comfort zone. You need to perform mental tasks that are challenging. You need to interact with people. And lastly, these activities have to be fun. Play mind games or play video games that require more thinking. Do something instead of sitting on the couch watching TV.
This way you will always keep your brain stimulated and prepared to take on anything. You will have to work hard to do this but you will like the benefits. Your brain has the potential for much more. You can than additionally try out various techniques for improving memory that will push you even more and will ultimately increase your brain power. Do not accept average results. You are capable of achieving higher mental abilities. You can have photographic memory. You can read incredibly fast. You can gain higher IQ. These are not determined by genetic factors. The brain is flexible and highly adaptable which means that it can be molded and improved. You just need to work hard and achieve your goal.
